The Weight of Glory is a Christian indie rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. This quintet includes lead singer/ukulele/acoustic guitar player Stone Meyer, drummer Stephen Palmer, guitarist Mitchell Blom, bassist Drew Smyser, and cellist Becca Bradley. The Weight of Glory features a different sound from many of its counterparts, due to the band’s folk tendencies and usage of unique instruments like the ukulele and cello. By implementing such distinct features in their music, The Weight of Glory, along with artists like Gungor and Psalters, are reviving the folk sound to Christian music.
The Weight of Glory began writing music in early 2010 after the band’s frontman, Stone Meyer, recognized his dream to represent Jesus through song in his close friends Mitchell, Becca, and Stephen. The band developed their unique sound by finding inspiration from bands like United Pursuit Band, The Beatles, Thrice, Owl City, and Radiohead. As students at the musically-driven Belmont University, they had difficulty finding available practice rooms. Therefore, the band practiced in the Maddox Grand Atrium, a heavily-traveled Belmont spot. Not long after, the band recognized the necessity of a bass player to complete their sound. Drew Smyser filled this position, and the Weight of Glory was officially born.
In their short time as a band, The Weight of Glory has received many amazing opportunities. Along with playing shows around the Nashville area, the band performed in the Christian Showcase at Belmont University in both 2010 and 2011. Additionally, they opened a show in Alabama for big name artists Jars of Clay, The Afters, and Matt Maher. This past summer, The Weight of Glory acted as worship leaders for the M-FUGE camp in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Weight of Glory continues to travel around the United States to represent Jesus in song in a creative and inspiring way.
